Arizona State wins the 2025 Men's Ice Breaker tournament

Arizona State's powerplay EXPLODED for five goals in a 5-2 win over Alaska Fairbanks to capture the 2025 Men's Ice Breaker championship.

Coming into the game, the Sun Devils' powerplay was just 2-for-17 to start the season and went 1-for-6 against Notre Dame on Friday night. But they figured it out tonight, scoring all five goals in nine tries to secure a championship win over Alaska Fairbanks.

Cruz Lucius shined in the third period for Arizona State, scoring a hat trick in just over five minutes of game time, giving ASU a cushion as the clock ran down.

Connor Hasley made 34 saves in the win for ASU, earning his first win as a Sun Devil. ASU led in shots, 40-36 in what was mostly a tightly-played defensive battle. But the wheels fell off late for Alaska, and the Sun Devil powerplay was too much to handle as they pulled away late in the third period.

Arizona State wins the Ice Breaker championship in its first tournament appearance, while Alaska comes away from the weekend with a top-10 upset over No. 8 Quinnipiac on Friday night. Alaska G Lassi Lehti was impressive all weekend, making 67 saves on 73 shots in two games for a .918 SV%.

😈 Devils up by one after 40 | ASU 2, UAF 1

The second period was a story of powerplays and penalty kills, with each team getting a couple of chances on the man advantage in the period.

ASU got on the board about seven minutes in, courtesy of Kyle Smolen on the powerplay, extending the lead to 2-0.

But Alaska Fairbanks got a couple of powerplay chances of its own later in the period, and the Nanooks capitalized off a deflection from Chase Dafoe, pulling them within one heading into the locker room.

Shots are dead even at 26 apiece after two periods. Alaska has a slight edge in faceoffs, leading 27-25, while ASU leads in blocked shots, 15-12. Arizona State got out to a hot start in this one, outshooting Alaska 10-5 over halfway through the period. The Sun Devils opened the scoring with a powerplay goal from Logan Morrell, his second of the season.

The Nanooks wouldn't go down easily, though, as they clawed their way back in the later minutes of the period, bringing the shot total to a more respectable 12-10 in favor of ASU.
