πŸ§Ÿβ€β™‚οΈ Biggest fears for CFP contenders

Although we only have five weeks remaining in the season, there are plenty of nightmare scenarios for the top CFP contenders. Ahead of Halloween, our own Stan Becton broke down some of the biggest fears for the nation's top teams.

Here are a few of the fears to be on the lookout for down the stretch:

  • No. 1 Ohio State: Michigan
    • The Buckeyes have been unable to overcome their arch rival up north recently. Michigan is going for its fifth consecutive win against OSU which would be its longest win streak since the 1920s. Ryan Day's squad, same as last season, has had a far better year than the Wolverines, but this rival can always produce unexpected outcomes. A loss could knock the Buckeyes out of the Big Ten championship, costing them a chance at a bye.
  • No. 4 Alabama: Playing in Jordan-Hare
    • Similar but not to the same extent as Ohio State, the Tide have had some close calls with their in-state nemesis, especially when they play in Jordan-Hare Stadium. In Bama's last four matchups in Auburn, it is 2-2 with the two wins coming by a combined five points. On the otherside, the Tide have won the past four Iron Bowls in Tuscaloosa by at least two scores. A loss could shake up the SEC with a potential road block of one-loss conference foes.
  • No. 5 Georgia: Haynes King
    • Kirby Smart hasn't lost to the Yellow Jackets since his first year in Athens in 2016. But this is easily the strongest Tech team the Bulldogs will face. Brent Key's team will likely enter undefeated, and a win over Georgia would all but guarantee a CFP spot. Last season, Haynes King was a one-man wrecking crew, with five total touchdowns as Tech took UGA to eight overtimes in Athens. The Dawgs better be careful in Week 14, already holding a loss. A second could put Smart's squad on the bubble come CFP time.

πŸ“ Tracking the undefeated

With just five weeks of the regular season remaining, only six teams remain undefeated heading into Week 10. Four of the six are in action this weekend, looking to stay perfect on the year.

Here are the four undefeated teams to watch this weekend:
*Undefeated teams are in bold

  • No. 8 Georgia Tech at NC State, 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1
    • The Ramblin' Wreck is rolling into Week 10, winning their last three games by at least two scores. Brent Key's squad has three unranked conference matchups before what could be a top-10 matchup against Georgia in Week 14.
  • No. 2 Indiana at Maryland, 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 1
    • Obviously, its impossible to say for sure, but the Hoosiers look primed to finish the regular season without a loss. Curt Cignietti's squad has four unranked Big Ten opponents left on its schedule, only one of which holds a winning record. Indiana's final two opponents are a combined 4-12, but three of their last four games are on the road.
  • Navy vs. North Texas, 12 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 1
    • The Midshipmen are the last undefeated in the American, but their next four matchups will be their toughest of the season. If Navy can get by a strong North Texas team this weekend, Notre Dame, South Florida and Memphis still lie ahead.
  • No. 1 Ohio State vs. Penn State, 12 p.m. ET on Saturday, Nov. 1
    • In August, this was one of the most anticipated matchups of the season. But a lot has changed in three months. The Nittany Lions are now without their head coach and quarterback and are losers of four straight. The Buckeyes should coast to Week 14 where their achilles heel over the past four seasons awaits in Michigan. Its impossible to guarantee a win against their arch rival, but the defending champs have a real shot of finishing the regular season undefeated.

🍿 Week 10 games to watch

With the first College Football Rankings set to be released on Tuesday, Nov. 4, this will be teams' last audition to solidify their resume ahead of the first release. While there's obviously still four weeks to play after this weekend, it will give fans an programs a relative gauge of where the CFP committee is leaning down the final stretch of the regular season.

But don't worry, we have you covered right here with all of the biggest games to keep an eye on this weekend:

The noon slate is headlined by a red-hot No. 9 Vanderbilt team traveling to Austin for a date with No. 20 Texas. This game is pivotal for both programs, but more so for the Longhorns, who could be a loss away from sullying their postseason aspirations. Vanderbilt could be able to afford a loss, especially in an intimidating road environment, but it would likely demand perfection from the Commodores for the rest of the season.

The afternoon slate has no ranked vs. ranked matchups on the board, but that leaves the door open for plenty of big upsets. The most notable will kickoff in Jacksonville in the annual neutral site matchup between Georgia and Florida. Of course Florida's postseason hopes are next to none at this point, but the Gators will relish the opportunity to spoil the Dawgs' season. We've already seen Florida put a wrench in Texas' record, and Kirby Smart's squad should expect the Gators' best shot on Saturday afternoon.

The night slate headlines Week 10 with No. 14 Tennessee hosting No. 18 Oklahoma. Each team enters with two losses, and both programs should be treating this SEC showdown as an early playoff game. In the Big Ten, No. 23 Southern Cal flys to Nebraska for a battle of two-loss conference foes. And if you haven't had enough football by the time these games wrap up, No. 17 Cincinnati takes on No. 24 Utah in the Big 12 late into Saturday night in the College GameDay matchup that could shake up the conference.

🚍 GameDay headed to Salt Lake City

For the sixth time in program history, the College GameDay crew is headed to Salt Lake City for the late-night Big 12 matchup between No. 17 Cincinnati and No. 24 Utah. This will be the first matchup between the two schools in program history, as both schools are within their first three seasons in the Big 12.

The Utes are coming off a commanding 53-7 win over Colorado, as the AP voters welcomed Utah back to the poll in Week 10. Kyle Whittingham's squad is likely in a must-win scenario this weekend, already holding two conference losses to BYU and Texas Tech. Cincinnati sits atop the conference standings with undefeated BYU, and a win this weekend puts the Utes right back in contention. A third loss, however, will probably shut the door on their conference title and CFP hopes in a top-heavy Big 12.

Meanwhile, the Bearcats, winners of seven straight after an opening week loss to Nebraska, are looking to continue their tear through the Big 12. Cincinnati has avoided the top seven teams in the Big 12 around them, and Utah will likely be its toughest test of the season thus far. They have a Week 13 matchup with BYU looming, and head coach Scott Satterfield would love to enter that showdown still undefeated in the conference.

πŸ“ˆRisers
There wasn't a whole lot of movement inside the rankings this week, with the top six staying put and 7-10 trading spots. No. 21 Michigan and No. 17 Cincinnati made the biggest jump inside the poll, each moving up four spots. We also have four new entrants in the poll, as we welcome No. 22 Houston for the first time this season with Southern Cal, Utah and Memphis making a return in the final three spots, respectively.

πŸ“‰Fallers
If there are no major risers, that usually indicates not that many teams fell far. But there are still a few noteworthy movements. South Florida owns the biggest drop, from No. 18 to the outside of the poll after a loss to Memphis. LSU exits the rankings for the first time this season following a home blowout to the hands of No. 3 Texas A&M. It was only the Tigers' second home loss in a night game under Brian Kelly, but it was enough for the program to part ways with their head coach on Monday.

No. 18 Oklahoma fell five sports and No. 19 Missouri fell four after conference losses to higher ranked foes.
