Jack Eichel college hockey tournament highlights at BU

Since the first NHL draft in 1963, there have been 220 college hockey players drafted in the first round from 30 Division I programs. Michigan leads the way with 35 first-rounders, followed by Boston College with 27.

St. Lawrence’s Alex Campbell was the first NCAA hockey player picked in the first round when he was taken second overall by the Boston Bruins in 1964. Since then, 219 other NCAA hockey players have been drafted in the opening round. Here is a complete breakdown of the history of NCAA men’s hockey players picked in Round 1 of the NHL draft:

HISTORY: Colleges with the most DI men's hockey championships

No. 1 overall picks from DI men's hockey

There have only been five college hockey players to go No. 1 overall. Michigan State’s Joe Murphy was the first in 1986, when he was picked by the Detroit Red Wings. Most recently, BU’s Macklin Celebrini was the top pick in the 2024 draft by the San Jose Sharks. Boston University is the only college to produce multiple first-overall picks.
